The Chamber choir of Stuttgart was founded by the conductor Frieder Bernius while he was still studying. It was his goal to raise the technical and the performance level of vocal music of all epochs and styles towards the professional level of instrumental music.

He succeeded in doing this: From a pool of round about 80 singers he can nowadays choose those singers, who are needed and who are able to perform any vocal work of any epoch or genre – regardless whether he needs 20 voices for an a-cappella group; singers who are specialised in the field of 19th or 20th century vocal music (with up to 16 independent voices and soloists); singers who are accomplished in the field of baroque music (with Falsettos in Alto and singers with special knowledge of the stylistic of baroque music) or whether he needs up to 60 singers for oratories and operas dating from the 18th to 20th century.

The choristers come from all parts of Germany and sometimes from the neighbouring countries. Auditioning and several hours of one-to-one rehearsals with the choir director proceed their admission as regular members of the Chamber chorus. This system does not only insure a stylistic flexibility but also helps to avoid a performance routine.

Existing now for more than 30 years, the Chamber choir of Stuttgart has acquired a wide range of the repertoire of European vocal and choral music dating from early baroque to the 21st century. Right now the special focus lies on works of the high baroque period(Bach and his sons, Zelenka, and Handel) and oratories of the 19th and 20th century (Poulenc, Ligeti and arrangements for 16 independent voices by Clytus Gottwald).

The artistic success of the Chamber choir of Stuttgart is shown by invitations to all important European festivals and over 80 CD productions with EMI, Sony and Carus-publishing house, from which many have won international record awards (egg. Edison, Diapason d’or, Classical Internet Award, and eleven German record Awards).
The zenith of international reputation is mirrored by tours throughout North America in 1989, 1992, and 2004 and throughout Asia in 1988, 1996, 2002 and 2006.
The International Federation of Choral Music asked the ensemble to join the first and fourth world symposium for choral music in Vienna and Sydney in 1987 and 1996.
