The University of North Texas A Cappella Choir is the premier ensemble of the eight choirs which comprise the UNT choral program. Founded in 1939, the choir has enjoyed a rich performance history, including a State Department sponsored tour of Europe and participation in world premiers of significant works for chorus. The choir is honored to have given concerts for the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) national conventions in 1999 (Chicago) and 2005 (Los Angeles). The choir has also made numerous appearances for the Texas Music Educators Association. The A Cappella Choir gave a well-reviewed performance of the Mozart Requiem with the Wichita Falls Symphony Orchestra in 2006. The choir will be featured in performance on the national conference of the National Collegiate Choral Organization (Cincinnati, Ohio) in October 2008 and on the program of the Taiwan International Choral Festival (Taipei) in July 2009.

The choir’s alumni hold prestigious singing or conducting positions with the Metropolitan Opera, New York City Opera, Chicago Lyric Opera, Houston Grand Opera, numerous regional opera companies, professional choirs (including the Singing Sergeants, the President’s Own Marine Band, the Navy Sea Chanters, the U S Army Chorus, and professional chamber choirs from Dallas to Boston), and university faculties across the nation.

In addition to their work with the A Cappella Choir, members regularly perform with the choruses of the Dallas Opera, the Ft. Worth Opera, Schola Cantorum of Texas, Denton Bach Society, and Paradigm. A significant number of our singers hold positions with professional choirs in the Dallas/Fort Worth region, including the Dallas Bach Society, Helios, the Orchestra of New Spain, Orpheus Chamber Singers, and the Texas Choral Artists.

The A Cappella Choir has released three compact disc recordings: O Gladsome Light! (2008), Imaginings (2004), and peace I leave with you (2002). In 2005 and 2006, members of the A Cappella Choir, under the banner of the North Texas Chamber Choir, recorded two compact discs for GIA Publications as companions to Teaching Music Through Performance In Choir, Volumes 1 and 2. In early 2008, GIA released a 3rd compact disc titled Musick’s Empire, featuring performances by the UNT A Cappella Choir and the North Texas Chamber Choir. In 2003, the UNT A Cappella Choir served as the core choir of the UNT Grand Chorus in a recording of Orff's Carmina Burana as set for Wind Symphony, Soloists and Chorus. The recording was on the Grammy Nominations ballot for 2004. This commercially released compact disc is available for purchase from Klavier Records.
