The singers perform for a variety of events on and off campus, including community functions, official University gatherings, recruiting events and singing the national anthem at Louisville Cardinal basketball games. The choir specializes in Elizabethan and Italian madrigals in addition to recently-composed secular and folk music from numerous countries. In July 2003 they received two gold diplomas at the international Johannes Brahms Competition in Wernigerode, Germany, where they won first place in the Spiritual/Gospel category and third place in the Chamber Choir category. In February 2004 they were featured in concert at the Southern Division Convention of the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) in Nashville, Tennessee. Last summer they were the recipients of three gold medals at the International Choir Olympics in Bremen, Germany, where they won first place in the Chamber Choir category and the Spiritual/Gospel category and fourth place in the Musica Contemporania category.
Kent Hatteberg, conductor
Kent Hatteberg is the Director of Choral Activities at the University of Louisville, where he directs two choirs, teaches graduate courses in conducting and choral literature and teaches undergraduate conducting and choral techniques. Dr. Hatteberg holds the Bachelor of Music degree from the university of Dubuque summa cum laude in piano and voice and earned master's and doctoral degrees in choral conducting from the University of Iowa, where he studied with Don V. Moses and conducted the Old Gold Singers. Named a Fulbright Scholar in 1990, Dr. Hatteberg studied conducting and choral-orchestral literature with Uwe Gronostay, conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic Choir and Professor for Conducting at the Hochschule der Künste. He sang in the Berlin Philharmonic Choir and pursued research on the early works of Felix Mendelssohn. Dr. Hatteberg made his professional conducting debut in 1993 as a guest-conductor with the Nederlands Kamerkoor in Amsterdam. He is Co-Director of the Kentucky Ambassadors of music, a select group of students who tour Europe every two years. In 2003 he was named Faculty Scholar at the University of Louisville and is the 2004 Kentucky Music Educators Association(KMEA) College/University Teacher of the Year. Under his direction the University of Louisville Collegiate Chorale has recently made several major national and regional appearences. |
